Kasanka National Park is one of the smallest Zambian National Parks. The Park is a beautiful wilderness of woodland, plains, lakes, rivers and swamps.

It was declared a National Park in 1972. It is located near Serenje district in the Central Province of Zambia.

Kasanka National Park is managed by the Kasanka Trust, a wildlife charity based in the Netherlands and the United Kingdom.

Being under private management and it entirely relies on tourism revenue and charitable funding.

The Park has numerous species of wildlife which include impalas, hippos, monkeys, sitatungas, servals, a variety of fish species and migratory bird species including the renowned straw coloured fruit bats migration spectacle.

Kansaka National Park Lodges And Guesthouses 

The National Park has two lodges and two camp sites from which to choose from: Wasa and Luombwa Lodges and Kabwe and Pontoon campsites.

Wasa Lodge

Wasa Lodge, the main lodge in the Park overlooks Lake Wasa and is closer to the main gate. It offers ensuite chalet accommodation. This is the place where you will experience the heart of Kasanka. The Lodge has been dubbed as "A Piece of Peace". It has beautiful chalets overlooking the lake in tranquil surroundings which will put you at ease as you enjoy the safari of a lifetime.

Between the chalets is a tree-top platform which makes for a stunning sunrise spot, where you can listen to the hippo, puku and fish eagles. There is the main dining area with beautiful views and it comes with a cosy bar and chill zone. You can also enjoy your drinks around the fireplace outside the main building.

Luombwa Lodge

With an airstrip nearby, Luombwa is ideal if you are travelling by air. Luombwa is situated on the other side of the Park on the banks of Luwombwa River.

The Lodge features chalets, overlooking the riverfront offering a private stay and with emphasis on adventure and exploration.

Kasanka Campsites

Currently there are 5 campsites, 3 are near the Pontoon along the Kasanka River, 1 at Kabwe and 1 at Bufumu.

Best Time To Go To Kasanka

Every year in November to December, Kasanka National Park is home to an estimated 8 to 10 million straw-coloured fruit bats. This is probably the best time to be there for you to witness this natural annual phenomenon.

The fruit bats migrate from the forests of central Africa to Kasanka where there’s an abundance of water berries, masukus and mangoes this time of the year. The dry season also offers plenty of wildlife for game enthusiasts.

Directions To Kasanka National Park

By Road

Driving to Kasanka from Lusaka or the Copperbelt will take you about 5-6 hours. As you take the Great North Road, pass through Kapiri. After the Mkushi turn-off you will reach the Serenje turn-off and clearly visible you will see the Lake Petroleum fuel station. It is recommended to fill your tanks here as it is the last fuel stop. 

As you continue on the main road for 36 kilometres you will find a tarred road on your left signed to ‘Mansa’. You should turn left here and continue for another 55 kilometres until you will see a large sign to Kasanka and the park gate on your left side. 

By Air

You can fly directly into Kasanka by private charter as there is an airstrip in the park (12deg 33’South 30deg 09’East). In addition air charters can be arranged from anywhere in Zambia to the National Park. 

It is a about a 1.5 hours flight from Lusaka, 1 hour from Mfuwe in the Luangwa, and only 45 minutes from Ndola.

In addition, there is an independent charter company, Sky Trails Ltd, based in Kasanka National Park. So there is usually an aircraft available locally for air charters to, from or around the area.
