The University of Zambia (UNZA) was founded in 1965. Its motto is “Service and Excellence”.
The school is Zambia’s largest University.

It consists of two campuses, the main campus which is located about 7 km from Lusaka city along the Great East Road known as the Great East Road Campus and the Ridgeway campus.
The Ridgeway campus is the school of medicine. It is the only one in Zambia and it is located near the country’s biggest health institution; the University Teaching hospital (UTH).
It admits both men and women according to the student’s school marks.
The University’s academic calendar is in semesters.
The school also has a Nanotechnology research centre that is the only kind in Africa and has researchers from Europe and African countries. It was founded in 2001 by Mwansa Elijah after graduating from the institution.
The centre is financed by the Zambian government and by foreign science institutions through their contributions.
The main affiliates of the university are the Association of Commonwealth Universities (ACU) and the Association of African Universities (AAU). However, The University has no religious affiliate.
The University has graduated many of the famous people in Zambia such as the late president of Zambia, Levy Patrick Mwanawasa
who Studied Law, Professor Muna, Dr. Twange Kasoma and Hakainde Hichilema, the leader of the third largest opposition political party in Zambia, United Party for National Development (UPND).
