The Zambian beer comes in two types, opaque beer and clear beer. Most affluent Zambians drink clear beer which is a bit more expensive.
The country's most popular and indigenous beer is Mosi Lager. The name is derived from Victoria Falls, which in the local Lozi language is Mosi-O-Tunya, meaning "Smoke that Thunders". It’s a Zambian beer and aptly the motto for the brand is Truly Zambian! You don’t believe me? - Ask anyone who has tested it!
Chibuku Shake Shake
The other popular brands are Castle Lager, Carling Black label and Eagle Lager. These are brewed by Zambian Breweries, subsidiaries of South African Breweries.
Currently, these are the beers that enjoy a sizeable amount of the Zambian beer market.
The alcohol content of Mosi is 4%, while that of Castle is 5%. Black label and Eagle Lager are at 5.5% each. These are the most commonly beers found in Zambia.
Beers in Zambia are served chilled and cost under $1.00 in most bars in towns, but are high priced in lodges and hotels.
There are also imported brands such as Amstel and Windhoek which cost almost double the local beers.
Less affluent Zambians go for opaque beer called Chibuku. The reason? It is very cheap! It is usually brewed from maize or sorghum. In most cases it is drunk in a group. When you buy a litre or so of Chibuku, you pass it around to your drinking friends.
Are you concerned about the Chibuku bar’s hygiene? Well, your worries are not justified because there are various pre-packaged opaque beer brands such as Chibuku Shake Shake, Kankoyo, Lusaka beer and other brands available on the market!
