The Zambian Flag – Symbol of Patriotism And Nation’s Wealth

The Zambian flag was hoisted for the first time at mid night, 23rd October 1964. The flag symbolizes patriotism and the nation’s wealth. According to the Zambian law, the national flag of Zambia is flown between the hours of sunrise and sunset.

The flag was designed by Mrs. Gabrielle Ellison, a government graphic artist who worked in Northern Rhodesia information services. She also designed the national coat of arms and many Zambian stamps.

Description

The main background colour is green with an orange coloured eagle in flight on the outer edge of the flag. Below the eagle are three vertical stripes of red (on hoist side), black and orange.

Green

Green represents the abundant country's agriculture, vegetation and natural wealth.

Red

Red stands for the struggle for freedom or the blood that was shed during the struggle.

Black

Black represents the colour of the people of Zambia.

Orange

Orange stands for the country’s mineral wealth, which includes major deposits of copper.

Eagle

The eagle in flight represents the people’s ability to rise above the nation’s problems.
