A state funeral was announced and national mourning of seven days was observed from 20th June to 27th June 2011.
Chiluba would be remembered for the pivotal role he played in pioneering the reintroduction of multiparty democracy to Zambia and the whole of Africa. At the time when Chiluba was the president of Zambia Congress of Trade Unions, he built a solid labour movement which advocated the rights of workers in Zambia.
Addressing a media briefing in Chipata on 18th June 2011, President Banda, the third republican president said:
“President Chiluba will be remembered, among other things, for laying the foundation towards the liberalization of the economy which has led to the present economic growth Zambia is experiencing. He will be sadly missed by all Zambians and human rights activists across the world.”The Zambia Congress of Trade Unions (ZCTU) also expressed deep sorrow. In its media release the mother body said:
“ZCTU regrets that the nation has been robbed of both a gallant workers’ rights activist and a champion of democracy. Dr Chiluba will be remembered for having re-introduced multiparty democracy and revolutionized the spirit of workers’ struggle in the labour movement of Zambia.”He was put to rest at Embassy Park on 27th June 2011, in Lusaka. This is the same place where third Zambian president, Levy Patrick Mwanawasa was buried on 3rd September 2008. The date of burial, 27th June 2011 was declared as a holiday by the Zambian government.
