Kafue National Park was established in 1924. The national park is the oldest and largest of Zambia's game sanctuaries. Covering an area of 22,400 square kilometres, it is home to about 55 different animal species.
The National Park covers three provinces; the Southern, North Western and Central provinces. The Park gets its name from the Kafue River, which cuts it in half; north and south. It is also home to Lake Itezhi-Tezhi, with a volume of 370 square kilometres.
The park has a wide diversity of wildlife, such as red lechwe, roan antelope, leopard, cheetah, puku, African wild dog, impala, duiker, sitatunga, sable, hippo, buffalo, crocodiles, lion, elephant and hartebeest.
The National Park has over 500 recorded bird species. The most common are black-cheeked lovebird, pel’s fishing owl, bohm’s bee-eaters, sunbirds, helmetshrikes, paradise fly-catchers, pelican, egrets, kingfisher, arnot’s chat’s, wattled crane, African fin-foot, crowned crane and chaplin’s barbet.
The best time is the dry season which runs from June to October. This time of the year, most parts of the park are accessible and game viewing is easier.
The airstrips at Lufupa, Ngoma and Chunga are operational all year round. If you are using the road, you can get to the park from Livingstone in the south and from Lusaka through Mumbwa town, which is a distance of 124 kilometres away from Lusaka.
The National Park has several lodges and camps. Check out the following...
