Lake Tanganyika

Lake Tanganyika is located in the northern province of Zambia and it’s shared by Burundi, the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), Tanzania and Zambia. But only 7 percent of its surface area is within Zambia. Lake Tanganyika is home to more than 350 different species of fish and fishing is the main economic activity.

By volume, Lake Tanganyika is the second largest freshwater lake and the second deepest after Lake Baikal of Siberia. In Africa, it is the second largest lake after Lake Victoria. Ruzizi River in the north is the largest inflow into the lake.

Fishing On Lake Tanganyika

Fancy yourself an angler? November to April (during the rainy season) is the ideal time to visit Nsumbu National Park for fishing. Nsumbu is a renowned fishing destination along the shores of Lake Tanganyika.

Fish species most common are lake salmon, yellow belly, golden perch, catfish, Nile perch and tiger fish.

Nsumbu National Park

Nsumbu National Park covers an area of 2000 square kilometres which includes part of the shores of Lake Tanganyika.

The Park has a wide range of wild animals. The most common are: bushbuck, warthog, puku, roan, sable, eland, hartebeest, zebra, duiker, crocodiles, antelope, sitatunga, hyena, side-striped jackal, serval, impala, waterbuck and reedbuck.

Nsumbu National Park is also home to big game like buffalos, elephants and hippos. Sightings of leopard and lion are not rare.

Best Time To Go To Kasaba Bay Lodge

Most areas of the park are accessible during the dry season. The season is best for game viewing because this is the time when wildlife congregates along the shores of the lake for water.

Construction Projects In The Offing

As of June 2017, the government of Zambia engaged a contractor form Singapore to build a five star hotel at a cost of US$ 115 million. This is in a bid to boost tourism investment in the Northern Tourism Circuit, which includes Northern and Luapula provinces respectively.
