Masuku Lodge is located in the Nkanga River Conservation Area (NRCA), just north of Choma, the provincial headquarters of the Southern Province. When in Choma, or if travelling south, the Lodge makes an ideal stop over.
The lodge has attractive thatched rondavels with the following features:
There are numerous birds and animals that frequent the Masuku dam which is just in front of the lodge. These include sable, zebra, kudu and vervet monkey. Other common species found in the thicket are puku, Lichtenstein’s hartebeest, eland, waterbuck, reedbuck, tsessebe, common duiker, and impala.
The Dam is a spectacular area for birders. A large variety of species have been recorded near the dam and in the conservancy. The Nkanga River Conservation Area is also home to the Chaplin's Barbet, Zambia's only endemic bird.
Some common species include open billed storks, saddle, kingfishers and grey heron. The population of bird species shoots up during the rainy season due to the large number of visiting duck and waterbirds.
Recently, a bird count was undertaken by the local ornithologist Pete Leonard who recorded 439 bird species in the Nkanga River Conservation area.
