Established in 1924, it is the oldest and largest of Zambia's game sanctuaries. It covers an area of 22,400 square kilometres and is home to about 55 different animal species.
The Park is in the central-western part of Zambia near Lusaka and the Copperbelt. This is where Kafue River receives two of its largest tributaries, the Lunga and Lufupa Rivers.
There is abundant game in the unspoilt atmosphere that prevails in Kafue Park; most commonly sighted are red lechwe, roan antelope, leopard, cheetah, puku, African wild dog, impala, duiker, sitatunga, lechwe, sable, hippo, buffalo, crocodiles, lion, elephant and hartebeest.
The Kafue National Park has over 500 recorded bird species. The most common are Black-cheeked Lovebird, Pel’s Fishing Owl, Bohm’s Bee-eaters, Sunbirds, Helmetshrikes, Paradise Fly-catchers, pelican, egrets, Kingfisher, Arnot’s Chat’s, Wattled Crane, African Fin-foot, Crowned Crane and Chaplin’s Barbet.
